Ceimig Limited develops, produces and sells a
number of leading edge thin film catalyst products
and precursors. As the result of an exciting technology breakthrough, Ceimig can produce the tetragonal phase of stabilised zirconia at only 360°C which compares with conventional processes which require temperatures of around 1,300°C. Platinum group metals and/or selected dopants can be added to form application-specific nano-dispersed catalysts.

These new thin film catalysts are true nano-technology applications which allow manufacturers, whose current manufacturing systems involve a combustion step, to apply the catalytic film by spin coating, ink-jet or spray techniques. The subsequent thermal treatment does not go above 360°C and hence is suitable for most fabrication processes. Ceimig’s combined technologies, for thin film catalysts and precious metals photo-deposition, open up many new manufacturing and technological opportunities for the sensor, miniature fuel cell, MEMS and other IC manufacturing industries.

Related IP provides a mechanism for the manufacture of exhaust catalysts for the new generation of lean-burn car engines, obviating the need to add an ammonia-generating compound such as urea to the petrol.

One advanced application of the technology is based on the manufacture of a doped ceramic employed in the production of leading-edge nano sensors for the detection of gases such as carbon dioxide.

Delivered to the sensor manufacturer in liquid form, the resultant ceramic nano “dot” is a variable resistor whose resistance alters as a function of the concentration of the target gas. This opens up the opportunity to manufacture reliable, low-cost, stable sensors for a wide range of automotive, military and general industrial applications.
